Industrial Process Heat: Frito-Lay – Modesto, California

When complete, this system will consist of 54,500 ft2 (5065 m2) of parabolic trough collectors covering an area of about 4 acres (1.5 hectares).The collectors will operate at temperatures up to 480° F (249 C) to deliver high temperature pressurized water that is used to generate 300 psig (21 bar) steam.This steam is delivered to the plant where it is mainly used to heat the oil used to fry potato and corn chips.The first half of the system is scheduled to come on line by the end of 2007, with an official ribbon cutting ceremony for the complete system scheduled for Earth Day of 2008.When complete, this will be the largest operating solar process heat system in the U.S.Under peak conditions, the collectors will produce over 8 million Btu/h (2.4 MW) of thermal energy.

The system is being installed with financial assistance from the California Energy Commission under the (Public Interest Energy Research) PIER program.Abengoa is providing the solar equipment to Frito-Lay (a division of PepsiCo) under a subcontract with the General Contractor, American Energy Assets (AEA).

This PT-1 system comprises 27,250 ft2 (2,533 m2) of solar collectors on two acres of land.The solar collector field heats a pressurized water district-heating loop to about 240° F.The district-heating loop provides thermal energy for space heating and DHW for a complex serving 6,000 inmates and staff.No thermal storage is incorporated into the system, other than the thermal mass of the heating loop itself.During the summer months, the system provides essentially 100% of the thermal needs of the prison. The solar system came on line in 1990 and has operated continuously ever since.
