90s: CSP and Photovoltaic R&D Projects

In 1993, a turn-key project was supplied to Abengoa of the Toledo PV Photovoltaic Plant of 1 MW, owned by Union Fenosa, Endesa and RWE, and subsidized by the European Union.

In 1994, regarding tower technology, several R&D projects were performed to develop different types of conventional heliostats, subsidized partly by the European Union Framework Programs (IV, V, and V). Such viability projects are Solgas, in the search of steam generation, and the second, Colon Star, focused on electric energy generation.

Between 1995 and 2000, trough projects were carried out (Framework Program IV and V of the EU), among which these are to be noted:

  • The Theseus Project: feasibility study of the installation of a Cylinder Parabolic Trough Plant in Greece.

Eurotrough Trough

  • Eurotrough: Abengoa Solar is considered as the project leader. The purpose of the project is to improve the optic efficiency of trough technology and also to improve manufacturing and assembly processes. DISS: It is based on the direct generation of steam on the receiver. As from this technology, substantial improvements are expected (approx. 30%) on the efficiency of the trough.
